Bean Bag Phonics
Supplies:
26 pieces of white paper
Magic markers or crayons
6 bean bags
This is very simple phonics game that can be played with just one child or a room full of them. You begin by writing each letter of the alphabet on a sheet of paper. Make them big so the children can really see them. Place the sheets of paper on the floor in random order then have the child stand 3 or 4 feet back. Give the child a word to spell. It can be as easy or difficult as you wish just make sure it doesn't exceed 6 letters because you are only using 6 bean bags. The child will then toss their bean bag toward each letter in the word that you asked them to spell. They should try to get the letters in the correct order or they can even get them in any order as long as the spell the word correctly aloud. You can make this activity more of a challenge if you use a smaller number of pieces of paper and put blends on each such as ch, sh, wh, ee, oo. You can then have them throw the bean bag and have the practice the blend that they land on. It can be made very versatile depending on the skills of your children.
